Driving from Boston:
From Blue Hill Ave, make a left onto Seaver Street, and a right onto Columbus Ave. and a left onto Massachusetts Avenue into Central Square, Cambridge.

Driving from South, West and NYC:
RTE 90E and exit towards Prudential Ctr/Copley Square. Merge into Avenue of the Arts/Huntington Ave/MA-9. Turn right onto Massachusetts Ave. Take Mass Ave. and cross the bridge and continue into Central Square.

Driving from North:
Take 93S to Storrow Drive, continue on Storrow Drive to Massachusetts Ave. Exit right to Cambridge, take Mass. Ave until you reach Central Square.

MTBA:
Take the MBTA Red Line to Central Square.


CAMBRIDGE CARNIVAL INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

It Only Gets Better Every Year!

Cambridge, MA—Cambridge Carnival International is celebrating the 10th anniversary of one of the largest outdoor multicultural festival in New England. Once again, the streets of Cambridge will be filled with elaborate costumes. This year’s festivities include a Cambridge City Hall Kick-off, 3rd Annual Steel Band Showcase and Panorama, a KidsFest and the annual parade and festival.

The City of Cambridge, through the Mayor’s Office is sponsoring a 10th Anniversary Kick Off on the steps of City Hall on Friday, August 16, 2002 from 4:30pm-6: 30pm. Joining in the kick-off will be a mini carnival with a steel band performance, costume showcase, DJ and refreshments. All are invited to attend this free event.

The 3rd Annual Steel Band Showcase and Panorama[*] will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2002 from 3pm-7pm at University Park in Central Square, Cambridge. Four to five steel bands from Maine, Connecticut and Boston will perform for 20-30 minutes each, and will be judged on their tune renditions. Participants will have a chance to win two (2) round-trip, economy class tickets for travel from Boston/New York to Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua, St. Lucia or Barbados sponsored by Air Jamaica. The Cambridge Carnival Steel Band Panorama is sponsored by Cambridge Savings Bank, Carvel Ice-Cream ATT Broadband and Air Jamaica.

The Carnival is a Caribbean and Mardi Gras style costume parade and festival featuring a costume competition, steel bands, live music and it is scheduled to take place on Sunday August 25, 2002 from 12pm-7pm in Central Square, Cambridge. The parade takes place from 12pm-2pm and begins at Blackstone and the festival continues until 7PM with food, fun and music. Joining in this year’s parade will be costumed bands representing various islands of the Brazil, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and other Caribbean and South American countries. The costumed band competition will provide prizes for the best portrayal of Carnival, which demonstrate craftsmanship, creativity, visual impact, presentation, and the Spirit of Carnival. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend. Participants will have a chance to win two (2) round-trip, economy class tickets for travel from Boston/New York to Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua, St. Lucia or Barbados sponsored by Air Jamaica. The festival is free and open to the public.

This year the KidsFest place from 12pm – 5pm and will feature a large area exclusively for children located in the parking lot on Norfolk Street and Bishop Allen Drive, (behind Blockbuster Video) and will include entertainment, arts and crafts for children of all ages. The KidsFest is sponsored by Carvel Ice Cream, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

*Announcement:
The entire North American concert tour of the Trinidad All Stars Steel Band has been canceled and therefore there is no Boston/Cambridge appearance. All other scheduled programs for Cambridge Carnival International, Inc. 10th Annual celebration will proceed as planned.
